Couponing for Preppers

If you've ever watched the TLC show "Extreme Couponing," you'll notice that they have stockpiles that could rival those of emergency preppers. The difference is, preppers store items like bulk flour, water and beans and couponers often have lots of condiments, Hamburger Helper and boxed cereal!

I started couponing to stockpile and save money, however, I've found that is a perfect compliment to emergency preparedness stockpiling and you don't have to spend thousands of dollars on MREs, buckets of flour or #10 cans of green beans. Here are some ideas of sales and coupons to watch for that can become a working emergency stockpile. As the experts say, "Store what you eat and eat what you store." That's a lot easier to do with everyday-sized products than with bulk items.

Many of the typical prepper storage "essentials" can often be purchased cheaper per unit with coupons and sales. Items like flour, oatmeal, dried milk, dried beans, rice, pasta, shortening, vegetable oil, mayonnaise, salad dressing, peanut butter, dried soup mix, sugar, honey, jam, powdered juice mix, salt, baking powder and yeast. It may seem that buying in bulk is cheaper, but consider that a 50 pound bag of all-purpose flour can cost 96¢ a pound from some prepper web sites and a 25 pound bag from Sam's Club is a whopping $1.93 a pound. A good coupon and sale combo can get you a 5 pound bag of flour for just $1.28 (that's just 26¢ per pound!) Shop smart and get pasta for 50¢/lb, mayo for $6 a gallon and peanut butter for free! The key to stockpiling smaller packages is rotating (using older items first) and using what you buy. Items bought and stored in larger amounts - such as flour, sugar, rice sand pasta - should be repackaged and stored in the same way as those which were bought in bulk by using storage solutions such as sealed mylar bags, food-grade buckets and oxygen removers.

Here are some great long-term or extended shelf-life food items to consider stocking up on while couponing:
Canned tuna (5 years)
Spam (5+ years)
Mashed potato flakes (5+ years sealed pouch)
Coffee (2 years)
Complete Pancake Mix (2+ years sealed pouch)
Canned vegetables and tomatoes (2-4 years)
Canned fruit (3+ years)
Canned beans (2+ years)
Tomato sauce (12 months)
Hard cheeses (Indefinitely if waxed)
Canned chunky soup (1-3 years)
Bisquick (1 year)
Evaporated Milk (18 months - 2 years)
Beef Stew (Indefinite)
Velveeta (up to 1 year)
Sports drinks (5+ years)
Canned beef hash (Indefinite)
Spaghetti sauce (2 years)
Ramen noodles (5 years)
Canned chili (Indefinite)
Hormel Completes meals (18 months)
Betty Crocker Helpers Complete Meals (4 years)

And don't forget the meal enhancement products such as Campbell's Great for cooking soups, Knorr seasoning packets, McCormick seasoning and Lipton Recipe mixes.

Copp's Catalina match ups

Do you know what Catalinas are? They are those extra strips of paper the cashier sometimes hands you that printed out with your register receipt. Sometimes they are coupons for a specific product, sometimes they are an ad to let you know about deals that are coming soon and other times they are "YourBucks" which are like money in your pocket! YourBucks give you the money off your next transaction, whether you buy that product again or not. The cool thing is - Copp's will double these up to $1 like any other coupon! So, don't just throw those away anymore!!

On Wednesday, I bought some Kraft shredded cheese and got a Catalina that announced a deal starting on March 2nd - buy 3, 4 or 5 Kraft items listed on the Catalina and get a YourBucks coupon for $2, $3 or $4. It was important to know this, because I had coupons for Kraft items on the list PLUS those same items were on sale 2/$4 this week. If I hadn't paid attention, I would have missed out on Kraft 80z block and shredded cheeses for 70% - 80% off! I bought 10 Kraft items, 5 each in two transactions, and used the $8 worth of YourBucks coupons I received on my third transaction.

There is a Catalina YourBucks coupon that will be printed when you buy 3 or more boxes of Nature Valley Granola bars. Buy 3 get $1 YourBucks, buy 4 get $2 and buy 5 or more and get $3. These are not coupons, but money off your next transaction. The $1 YourBucks will actually double to $2 like a coupon, but if you buy 6 this week you would get the $3 YourBucks and free milk and eggs worth up to $6.

Buy 6/$15 (reg. $3.12 each) Use 3 -  50¢/2 (GM 2/5/12) + $3 YourBucks = like paying $1.50 each (52% off) PLUS free milk and eggs worth up to $6 additional savings!

The same deal (with YourBucks) applies to Fiber One bars. Use 50¢/2 (SS 2/26/12)

The Catalina will print until 3/18/12.

Dole Fruit Crisps - buy 5 for $2.09 each (reg. $2.29) Print and use 2 - 50¢/1 printable coupons, get $1 YourBucks Catalina, which will double to $2 on your next transaction = like paying $1.29 each (44% off) If you can get 5 coupons you could save up to 70%!

Also this week, buy 4 cans of Dole Tropical fruit cans and get a 50¢ YourBucks Catalina coupon. Use 50¢/3 printable coupon = up to $2 savings on 4 cans. (Don't forget YourBucks coupons double up to $1!)

Get 4 of the 8oz Dole pineapple chunks, on sale for 89¢ (reg. 99¢) and you'll get a 50¢ Catalina, which can double to $1 on your next order (OYNO). That's like paying 64¢ each (55% off)

Additionally, get 75¢ Catalina WYB 4 cans of Dole mandarin oranges and 75¢ WYB 4 cans (20oz) pineapple chunks.

The Dole Catalinas will also print until 3/18/12.

California Kitchen Pizza w/Sides are on sale $6.99 (reg. $7.99) Buy 2 get $1 YourBucks that will double on your next transaction = like paying $5.99 (
